Brood 0 consists of 29 insects. They are the insects featured in the Kihikihi installation. These insects have motion sensors attached to their backs, making them sensitive to audience movement.
There are 29 connection points on the trees that the insects can be attached to. The choice of 29 reflects the importance of prime numbers to cicadas. Many species, such as those in the Magicicada genus, have prime-numbered life cycles, like 13 or 17 years. This strategy is believed to protect cicadas from predators, as the irregularity of their emergence makes it difficult for predators to adapt. This element of surprise helps cicada broods flourish [1], hence the decision to use prime numbers where possible in the project.
